A Friday night delivery in Brownsville turned violent when a 41-year-old worker was shot outside a Chinese takeout shortly after 8 p.m., police said. The man was hit in the left thigh and ended up lying in the middle of Riverdale Avenue near Hinsdale Street, according to witnesses and authorities. He was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he is expected to survive.
Scene And Response
According to New York Daily News, responding officers found the victim screaming in the street and quickly called EMS. The outlet reports that the man had been shot while making a delivery outside the Chinese restaurant. Police brought him to Brookdale for treatment and told the paper he is expected to pull through.
Neighborhood Context
The shooting lands in the middle of an ongoing push to rein in gun violence in Brownsville. A recent local roundup highlighted sweeping indictments charging dozens of people tied to shootings across the neighborhood, part of a multiyear effort that prosecutors say is aimed at cutting down on retaliatory street violence.
Suspects At Large
Police told New York Daily News they are searching for three men who were seen running from the block right after the gunfire. One suspect was described as wearing a black jacket and black pants, another as wearing a blue jacket, and a third could not be immediately described, authorities said.
Delivery Worker Safety
Delivery workers have increasingly become the reluctant face of front-line risk in New York and beyond, especially on late-night runs. Advocates say couriers are particularly exposed when they are out alone with cash, food and little protection. The 2022 killing of Zhiwen Yan in Queens while he was out on a delivery sparked widespread outrage and national coverage, as reported by ABC News.
Investigators are still piecing together what led up to Friday's shooting. Police are urging anyone with information, video or tips to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. The investigation remains active.
