Carvana is adding inspection and reconditioning operations at its ADESA Chicago wholesale auction site in Hoffman Estates, a move the company says will create roughly 100 jobs and expand same-day delivery options for Chicagoland buyers. The expansion covers vehicle inspection, reconditioning and fulfillment roles, along with several salaried leadership positions. Hiring has already started, and the company says many of the openings do not require a college degree.

Inspection, reconditioning and same-day delivery

According to a press release from Carvana, the company will integrate its Inspection and Reconditioning Center (IRC) capabilities into the ADESA Chicago site to build up retail inventory on the ground and speed up delivery. The worksite, an approximately 75-acre facility with nearly 6,000 parking spaces that has served wholesale customers since 2016, already has the infrastructure to support both the long-running auction operation and the new reconditioning work. “Bringing IRC capabilities to ADESA Chicago strengthens the speed and efficiency of our national network while deepening our presence in the Midwest,” Brian Boyd, Carvana’s senior vice president of inventory, said in the release.

Local officials welcome the expansion

Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod called the expansion “exactly the kind of hands-on, good-paying jobs our workforce is looking for,” according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Carvana already has a visible footprint in the suburbs, including local pickup points, and officials say bringing more reconditioning work on site should make more vehicles available locally for quicker, including same-day, delivery. Local business leaders say the positions could help fill a need for skilled, entry-level work in the area.

Where this fits for Carvana

In its April earnings release, Carvana said it sold 187,393 retail vehicles in the first quarter, roughly 40% year-over-year growth. The company argues that level of volume requires more reconditioning capacity and inventory pools near major markets so buyers and dealers can get vehicles sooner. The Hoffman Estates integration is intended to tighten turnaround times for both retail customers and wholesale buyers.

Part of a broader ADESA buildout

Bloomberg reported that Carvana bought ADESA's U.S. auction business for about $2.2 billion in 2022, a deal meant to give the online retailer the real estate footprint it needs to scale. Since the acquisition, the company has been converting ADESA sites into integrated auction-plus-reconditioning hubs, sometimes described as “megasites,” and industry publication Auto Remarketing notes that similar integrations have rolled out in other markets.

Hiring details and next steps

The company is currently hiring for about 80 roles in vehicle inspection, reconditioning and fulfillment, and says many positions require no college degree and include benefits, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Local candidates can find openings on Carvana's careers site as the company ramps up hiring and training. Village officials say they will be watching to see how many of the roughly 100 jobs are filled locally and how quickly the new reconditioning operation comes online.
