A fast-moving trailer home fire tore through a Cedar City neighborhood Sunday afternoon, and police say investigators believe one person may have died in the blaze. Crews battled heavy flames that engulfed a mobile home and spread to at least one neighboring house, damaging vehicles and nearby property. Two Cedar City police officers were treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation and later released.
According to FOX13, the fire was reported just after 12:30 p.m. near 1000 N. Main Street, where arriving crews found one trailer fully engulfed. The fire spread to a neighboring home and damaged several vehicles as firefighters worked to contain the scene. Police said the department issued a news release but did not identify any victims.
KSL lists the address as near 1027 N. Main Street and quotes the police release: “At this time, investigators believe there may be one deceased victim associated with the fire.” The outlet reports that the Cedar City Fire Department, Gold Cross Ambulance, Enoch City Police, Iron County Sheriff's Office, Utah Highway Patrol and Southern Utah University Police all assisted at the scene. Rocky Mountain Power disconnected electricity to affected homes during the response.
State fire marshal to lead probe
The Utah State Fire Marshal is leading the investigation into the blaze and will work with local crews to determine where and how the fire started. According to the Utah State Fire Marshal, the office provides fire-investigation support and coordinates with local departments during complex incidents. Officials have not released a cause and said identification of any victim will follow standard procedures.
What officials say next
Police said they will withhold names until next of kin are notified and positive identification is complete. Investigators have asked anyone with information or video from the area around midday Sunday to contact Cedar City police, as reported by FOX13. The Utah State Fire Marshal will release findings on the cause once the inquiry is complete.
