La Vecina is gearing up to fire off tacos and mezcal on Central Avenue, bringing a Tulum-inspired, outdoor-only hangout to the heart of Plaza Midwood. The Latino-fusion concept, from the teams behind Moo & Brew and Bocao Sushi, centers on a walk-up taco counter and a wraparound heated patio where neighbors can grab tacos, sip margs and stick around for weekend DJs. Owners say the menu will lean on homemade tortillas, shaved al pastor, Colombian coffee and mezcal-forward cocktails.
According to La Vecina's website, the project is taking over a roughly 600-square-foot storefront at 1306 Central Ave and highlights "classic al pastor, mezcal, walk up taco stand, heated patio" among its calling cards, plus Sunday brunch and Colombian coffee. The site invites neighbors to join an email list for pop-up events and updates, and points would-be regulars to the restaurant's Instagram handle, @lavecinaclt.
What to Expect at La Vecina
Axios Charlotte reports that Ken Thomas of Moo & Brew teamed up with Bocao Sushi owners Carlos Nuñez and Victor Abad to bring La Vecina to life, a process that has taken about three years. The buildout expands the former 600-square-foot unit into an open-air footprint, and the venue is set to operate entirely outdoors, with plans to winterize the patio next year to extend outdoor service. Designers on the project include local outfits Cluck Design and Made Outside, Axios notes.
A Neighborhood Spot Amid Change
Owners are pitching La Vecina as a neighborhood refuge. "La Vecina, she's the heart and soul of community," reads a recent Instagram post quoted by the Charlotte Observer. That local-first pitch lands in the middle of a busy run of openings and development along Central Avenue, where both independent operators and larger projects are reshaping the corridor. The mix of a walk-up counter, punch-bowl cocktails and weekend DJs is designed to keep the space feeling communal rather than corporate.
When to Go
According to Axios Charlotte, the team is targeting a spring 2026 opening, though an official launch date has not yet been posted. For updates, would-be guests are encouraged to sign up for the restaurant's mailing list or follow @lavecinaclt for word on pop-up events and the official opening announcement.
