A chaotic six-vehicle pileup in central Phoenix on Saturday evening left at least 10 people injured and several cars crumpled at the busy intersection of 16th Street and Thomas Road. Three children were rushed to hospitals in stable condition, while five adults were reported in critical or extremely critical condition. Investigators stayed at the intersection into the night, and police have not yet said what triggered the violent chain-reaction crash.
What Officials Said
Emergency crews were called out shortly after 7 p.m. to 16th Street and Thomas Road, where Phoenix firefighters arrived to find six heavily damaged vehicles and 10 people in need of evaluation, according to FOX 10 Phoenix. Capt. DJ Lee with the Phoenix Fire Department told the station that eight patients were taken by ambulance to nearby hospitals, while two others declined further medical transport after being checked at the scene. The Phoenix Police Department is leading the investigation and has not released information about how the crash started.
Injuries and Hospital Status
Arizona's Family reported that one adult man was transported in “extremely critical” condition. Three other men and one woman were listed in critical condition. Three pediatric patients were hospitalized in stable condition, officials said. Medical teams worked through the night as families waited for updates and investigators continued gathering details about what unfolded in the intersection.
16th Street Safety Record
This latest collision adds to a troubling stretch for 16th Street. A late-night hit-and-run at the same corner and other serious crashes along the corridor have been reported earlier this spring. Residents and traffic safety advocates say heavy traffic and risky crossings have fueled calls for stepped-up enforcement and street design changes. So far, city and state officials have not announced any immediate fixes in response to the latest wreck.
Investigation Ongoing
Phoenix police are still working to determine how the six-car crash unfolded and have not released a cause. Officials told Arizona's Family they expect to have more information Sunday. Authorities have not yet publicly identified any of the people who were injured.
