Tuesday, May 5, 2026 - Charlotte woke up to clear skies and a comfortable 59°F, with plenty of sunshine set to drive afternoon highs into the low 80s. It will stay warm and dry today, but strengthening southwest winds this afternoon will help set the stage for a wetter stretch Wednesday into Thursday, so keep those outdoor plans a bit flexible.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
As the lower atmosphere mixes out, southwest winds will ramp up into the 6 to 14 mph range, with frequent gusts around 22 to 26 mph and brief peaks near 30 mph in some exposed spots. The breeze will be most noticeable along the I-77 and I-85 corridors. It is a good day to secure patio furniture and lightweight yard items, and to be ready for sudden gusts if you are driving on exposed bridges or wide-open stretches of roadway.
Midweek Storms Could Turn Severe
A cold front sliding in on Wednesday, May 6, then slowing down into Thursday, May 7, will crank up rain and thunderstorm chances across the region. According to the National Weather Service, the main window for stronger storms runs from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning. A few storms could bring large hail, damaging winds and localized heavy downpours, with some spots picking up roughly one-half to three-quarters of an inch of rain. Forecasters say widespread flooding is not expected, but repeated rounds of heavy cells could still trigger brief urban street flooding where storms train over the same areas.
What This Means For Plans
If you have outdoor plans Wednesday evening, have an indoor backup ready and expect wet roads and spotty lightning in the area. After the front moves through, conditions dry out for most of the weekend, and highs should rebound into the upper 70s and low 80s by Sunday.
Fire Danger And Park Burn Ban
While humidity will not be extremely low everywhere, some pockets of relatively dry air combined with spring-dried grasses and brush could briefly elevate fire danger this afternoon. Mecklenburg County has already issued a mandatory burn ban across its park system beginning Monday, May 4. Park grills, fire pits and any open flames are off-limits until conditions improve, so follow posted rules if you are visiting county parks and nature preserves.
