A Charlotte moped rider who spent months in the hospital after a crash last summer has died, authorities said. Thirty-year-old Elijah Smoot was critically injured when his moped was hit along the 3200 block of Queen City Drive on Aug. 8, 2025, and he died on Tuesday after a prolonged fight to recover.

Officers were called to the stretch of Queen City Drive just before 10 p.m. that night, where they found a moped down in the roadway and Smoot unresponsive nearby, according to WSOC. MEDIC rushed him to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said the driver of a white Jeep involved in the crash was not hurt.

As reported by Queen City News, detectives said Smoot died on Tuesday after a months-long recovery battle. Investigators told reporters that preliminary findings show Smoot was trying to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone when he was hit. Toxicology results are still pending, and detectives say it is not yet clear whether speed or impairment played a role.
