Emergency crews rushed to the coastal bluffs near La Jolla this afternoon after a person reportedly tumbled from a cliff into a canyon, authorities said. The call came in just before 1 p.m., and officials had not immediately released any information about the person’s condition.
According to FOX5 San Diego, multiple agencies responded and San Diego lifeguards were among the units on scene. Video from news crews showed several emergency personnel clustered on a trail above the bluffs while the rescue unfolded below.
Why La Jolla rescues can be complex
La Jolla’s steep, crumbling bluffs and tight access trails often force crews into technical operations that are anything but quick. The City of San Diego’s lifeguard division, which is part of Fire‑Rescue, typically handles dozens of coastal cliff rescues each year and is trained in cliff and other technical extractions, according to San Diego Lifeguard Services.
San Diego Fire‑Rescue told FOX5 San Diego that dispatchers received the call shortly before 1 p.m. and sent multiple units to the scene. As crews continued working in the canyon, authorities had not yet provided additional details about the person’s condition.
This story will be updated as city and rescue officials release more information. Anyone with first-hand information or footage of the incident is asked to contact San Diego Fire‑Rescue or local news outlets so officials can follow up.
