A UPS route on Detroit’s east side turned surreal yesterday when a carjacker reportedly made the driver give a quick tutorial on how to run the delivery truck before stealing it. The driver was not hurt in the encounter, which unfolded in the 9500 block of Everts Street.
According to ClickOnDetroit, police said the suspect walked up to the UPS employee, announced the carjacking, then demanded instructions on how to operate the vehicle before driving off. Investigators have not released a description of the suspect or said whether the truck has been found, and detectives say the case remains under active investigation.
Delivery drivers targeted in similar thefts
This is not the first time a delivery worker has been caught in a frightening and bizarre theft. In 2023, an Amazon delivery van was carjacked at gunpoint on Detroit’s east side, according to WXYZ. That same year, doorbell camera footage in Prince George’s County, Maryland, showed armed suspects stealing a UPS truck, per FOX 5 DC.
Police asking for tips as investigation continues
Detroit police told ClickOnDetroit they are still working the case and are asking anyone with information to contact the department. No arrests or charges have been announced in connection with the incident.
Safety reminders for drivers and neighbors
Law enforcement and delivery companies routinely urge drivers to keep vehicle doors locked, stay alert to their surroundings and report anything suspicious. In past thefts, stolen delivery trucks have sometimes been ditched not long after they are taken, as surveillance footage and neighborhood tips have shown, according to FOX 5 DC.
