Four juveniles were detained after a tense motel standoff on East Colfax Avenue in Aurora on Thursday, when police zeroed in on a gray Audi tied to an alleged armed carjacking. Officers tracked down the vehicle, recovered the stolen car and a firearm, and detained several people during a morning operation at the motel. The man who reported the carjacking told police a gun was fired as he ran away, though he was not hit. Investigators say the case remains active and that charges are pending.
How officers tracked the vehicle
According to Sentinel Colorado, Aurora Police Deputy Chief Michael Gaskill said officers spotted the gray Audi at the Wolf’s Motor Inn on East Colfax and watched two juveniles walk up to the car before they took off running. Officers chased and detained those two, and say a gun was recovered during the pursuit. Two other juveniles barricaded themselves in separate motel rooms before eventually coming out during negotiations with police. An adult woman who exited a room with the juveniles was also detained, though police said they currently have no evidence tying her to the earlier carjacking. The stolen Audi was recovered during the response.
Juvenile privacy and next steps
Colorado law sharply restricts public access to juvenile records, and officials typically do not identify minors who are suspected of crimes. The Aurora Police Department says the juveniles will not be identified because of their age and that detectives are still working the case while prosecutors weigh potential charges. Why police can recover stolen cars quickly
Aurora has recently credited a Real Time Information Center, which pulls together city cameras, automated license plate readers, and other surveillance tools, with helping officers track suspects and recover stolen vehicles more quickly. Reporting on the RTIC notes that the department says the center has helped recover hundreds of stolen cars and given investigators faster situational awareness during unfolding incidents. See how the real-time nerve center works in Aurora cases for background on how the unit is used in local investigations, as per Hoodline.
What comes next
Aurora Police say the investigation is still underway and that charges are pending as detectives work to sort out who was involved in the reported carjacking. Anyone with information is asked to contact Aurora Police, since local tips can help investigators piece together the sequence of events around the East Colfax incident.
