Law enforcement returned to the decades-old mystery of Kristin Smart today, executing a fresh court-authorized search at an Arroyo Grande home linked to the long-running investigation into the missing Cal Poly student.
Search at Arroyo Grande property
San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s investigators confirmed they served a search warrant at a residence on East Branch Street, according to CBS Sacramento. The department said the operation was based on a search warrant signed by a Superior Court judge, but officials kept a tight lid on details and declined further public comment about what prompted the move.
Warrants across multiple locations
Local reporters saw sheriff’s deputies and FBI agents at the Arroyo Grande scene, and the sheriff’s office said the new court orders covered several sites: two locations in San Luis Obispo County, along with others in Los Angeles County and Washington State, as reported by KSBY. A public information officer told the station the warrants are limited in scope and remain under seal, and that the agency does not expect to release additional information about this round of searches.
Where this fits in the investigation
Kristin Smart vanished in May 1996, and her body has never been found. Over the years, the case has driven multiple searches and warrants, including earlier activity on East Branch Street and excavations on the Cal Poly campus, according to the San Luis Obispo Tribune. Paul Flores, convicted of Smart’s murder in 2022 and sentenced to 25 years to life, is currently appealing that sentence, CBS Sacramento reported.
Legal note
Because the latest warrants are sealed, investigators say they are legally barred from discussing specifics. That restriction has kept a tight cap on public details about potential evidence or additional charges, as noted by KSBY. The outlet also reported that the Smart family declined to comment on today’s developments.
Authorities have not said whether anything was recovered during the new search, and the sheriff’s office emphasized that the case remains active. In a statement reported by GV Wire, the department said it remains committed to bringing Kristin home to her family.
