A stolen delivery van tore down Richmond Highway near Lorton Road on Wednesday afternoon, slamming into cars and leaving a woman with life‑threatening injuries, according to Fairfax County detectives. Police say the driver, 31‑year‑old Alexandria resident Ibrahim Osman Hussen, was arrested at the scene and later charged in connection with the crash.
Detectives told the Fairfax County Police Department news desk that the chaos began around 3:31 p.m., when a 2020 Ram ProMaster used for package deliveries was reportedly taken while its driver was making stops in the Mount Vernon area. The unoccupied van headed southbound on Richmond Highway, striking several vehicles along the way, investigators said. Near Lorton Road, it crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a 2015 Nissan Altima and a 2023 Nissan Sentra before finally coming to a stop.
Police say the Altima’s driver suffered life‑threatening injuries in the crash, while Hussen was also hurt but survived. Detectives later linked Hussen to a burglary reported in the 9300 block of Old Colchester Road, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
FOX 5 DC reports that paramedics rushed the Altima driver to a nearby hospital, where she remained in critical condition as of Thursday. The driver of the Sentra was not injured. Medics treated Hussen for what authorities described as non‑life‑threatening injuries before he was taken into custody, the outlet adds. Northbound Richmond Highway was shut down for a period while crash teams and investigators worked the scene.
Charges and investigation
Detectives secured and served arrest warrants charging Hussen with burglary, felony hit‑and‑run, reckless driving, grand larceny, trespassing and petit larceny, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. He is being held without bond and will be transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center once he is medically cleared.
Victim specialists have been assigned to support the Altima driver’s family as investigators work to pin down the full sequence of events leading up to the crash, police said.
