One person was killed today after a vehicle veered off La Cresta Road in the Crest area of East County, tumbled roughly 200 feet down a steep embankment and burst into flames, authorities said. Fire crews found the burned-out wreckage in heavy brush below the roadway and pronounced the lone occupant dead at the scene. The rugged, brushy slope made it too dangerous to pull the vehicle out overnight, so recovery had to wait until daylight.
Crash scene and response
Firefighters and law enforcement headed to the area near 3180 La Cresta Road shortly after midnight, initially dispatched to what callers described as a rubbish fire. When crews arrived, they discovered the blaze was coming from a vehicle that had gone about 200 feet down the hillside and caught fire. A total of 22 personnel from Lakeside Fire, Heartland Fire, CAL FIRE, San Miguel Fire & Rescue, the California Highway Patrol, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, and AMR responded. La Cresta Road was shut down from around 12:30 AM to 4 AM, according to FOX5 San Diego.
Steep terrain and local concerns
The Crest community relies on San Miguel Fire & Rescue for coverage across steep, brush-filled hillsides where off-road rescues and recoveries are anything but straightforward. For years, residents and local planning groups have raised alarms about La Cresta Road, citing blind curves and narrow shoulders that they say increase the risk of crashes and slow emergency response times. San Miguel Fire & Rescue has highlighted those concerns along with recent community calls for safety improvements.
Investigation and recovery
Authorities said the cause of the crash is still under investigation, and the county medical examiner has not yet determined the official cause of death. Because of the treacherous terrain, the vehicle was left down the embankment overnight, with the California Highway Patrol planning to retrieve it sometime before noon on Wednesday. Deputies used a drone to scan the hillside and confirmed there were no additional victims, officials told FOX5 San Diego.
Calls for safety fixes
La Cresta Road has seen several serious crashes in recent years, and local planners are now pushing for targeted safety fixes, including centerline rumble strips, clearer signage and short pullouts where the terrain allows. After a head-on collision in February that killed a 72-year-old woman, the Crest Dehesa Granite Hills Harbison Canyon Planning Group asked residents to weigh in on possible improvements, East County Magazine reported.
CHP and sheriff’s investigators continued to document the scene today. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name and say more information will be made public as the investigation moves forward.
