An early morning night out in Deep Ellum turned violent today when a man was shot in the back during a clash between two groups in a parking lot. Dallas police say his injuries are not life-threatening. The gunman bolted before officers arrived, and investigators later found at least two vehicles in the lot riddled with bullet damage. The wounded man was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.
What Police Say
According to FOX 4, officers were called around 2:15 a.m. to a parking lot behind a building in the 2700 block of Elm Street after reports of a physical disturbance. When they arrived, they found a man who had been shot in the back.
Dallas police told FOX 4 that investigators believe a suspect pulled out a handgun during the confrontation, fired several shots, then took off before officers got there. At least two cars in the lot were hit by gunfire, and police have not yet released the names of either the victim or the suspected shooter.
Deep Ellum Safety Concerns
The latest shooting adds one more incident to a growing list of late-night violence in Deep Ellum, an entertainment district that has long struggled to balance a booming nightlife scene with public safety. A February knife fight that left two people dead outside a Good Latimer nightclub has already put the area under a sharper microscope, and D Magazine has outlined how police and local businesses have cycled through different strategies to keep crowds safe without gutting the district’s nightlife identity. Together, the incidents keep pressure on city officials to evaluate patrol patterns and possible policy changes.
Investigation Underway
Dallas police told FOX 4 that the victim was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover. The shooter is still on the loose, and detectives are interviewing witnesses and reviewing any available video from the area as the investigation moves forward.
The case remains active, and no arrests have been announced. Anyone who saw what happened or has video from the scene is urged to contact Dallas police as detectives work to piece together the moments leading up to the gunfire.
