A kitchen fire call on Detroit's east side turned into a homicide investigation yesterday after firefighters found a man who had been fatally shot inside a house on Longview Street near I-94 and Chalmers. Crews had just knocked down the flames in the kitchen when they discovered the victim, and investigators have since launched a homicide probe into what happened.
Firefighters found victim after putting out kitchen blaze
According to Metro Detroit News, crews were called around 10 a.m. for a report of a kitchen fire. After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters found a male victim who had been shot. Detroit police and fire investigators remained on the scene and said the investigation into both the shooting and the fire is ongoing.
Not the first time flames have concealed violence
The case echoes other incidents in Detroit where burned homes were later found to contain shooting victims, raising early questions about whether fire or gunfire came first. ClickOnDetroit reported a similar situation in 2023, when firefighters discovered a body after putting out a blaze on the city’s west side.
What officials are asking the public
Detroit police have not released the victim’s name and have not identified any suspects. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact detectives. This story will be updated as Detroit police or the Detroit Fire Department release additional details, per Metro Detroit News.
