Three people were seriously hurt in a two-vehicle crash early Saturday in downtown Portland, turning a quiet overnight stretch into an emergency scene. The collision happened just before 1:30 a.m. at West Burnside Street and NE 8th Avenue, where first responders arrived to find both drivers trapped in their vehicles. All three people involved were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries and are expected to survive, according to officials.
Crews reported finding both drivers pinned inside their cars and used hydraulic rescue tools to free at least one person before ambulances rushed the injured from the scene, as reported by KATU. Portland police say one driver is under investigation for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (DUII). The second vehicle was a rideshare carrying a passenger at the time of the crash. Investigators have not yet released the names of anyone involved and are keeping other details limited while the case remains open.
Investigation and response
The Portland Police Bureau’s Traffic Division is responsible for digging into serious injury crashes and DUII investigations, and it regularly runs targeted enforcement missions aimed at getting impaired drivers off the road. According to the bureau’s 2025 Crime Reduction Plan, those details add up to thousands of citations and more than 300 arrests, including roughly 200 DUII arrests tied to those enforcement missions, a sign of how heavily the city leans on cracking down on high-risk driving. Traffic investigators typically coordinate with Portland Fire & Rescue to secure crash sites, document evidence and remove wreckage so that streets can safely reopen.
How this fits into Portland's road-safety picture
City transportation data indicate that serious crashes remain a major concern. Portland’s Vision Zero summary notes 39 traffic deaths in 2025 and finds that most of the fatal wrecks happen on a relatively small "High Crash Network" of streets. The report also points to speeding and nighttime conditions as common ingredients in the most severe collisions, which is part of why early-morning crashes like this one tend to draw a heavy response and a detailed follow up. Officials maintain that a mix of enforcement and changes to street design will be key to cutting down on the most dangerous incidents.
Legal outlook
A police investigation into suspected impairment can lead to criminal charges under Oregon law. "Driving under the influence of intoxicants" is defined in ORS 813.010, which outlines what counts as DUII and how it is prosecuted. Any potential criminal case will hinge on test results, what investigators document at the scene and whether the Multnomah County District Attorney chooses to file charges. Anyone accused of DUII then faces the procedures and possible penalties spelled out in state statute.
Police have not released the identities of those involved and say the investigation remains active. This story will be updated if officials share more information or if charges are filed.
