A Sunday stop at a downtown San Antonio bus shelter turned violent when a man was stabbed multiple times and rushed to a hospital in critical condition, according to police. The attack unfolded along a busy stretch of West Commerce Street and briefly turned an ordinary transit stop into a crime scene as bystanders scrambled and first responders moved in.
San Antonio police told KENS5 that three suspects walked up to the victim at a bus shelter in the 200 block of West Commerce Street, assaulted him and then ran off before officers arrived. Detectives said they believe the confrontation may have been an attempted robbery and that the man was stabbed multiple times before being taken to a hospital in critical condition. As of Sunday evening, investigators had not found the suspects.
Transit Violence Adding Up
The stabbing is the latest in a series of ugly incidents near VIA stops and downtown corridors that have riders on edge. The San Antonio Express-News reported a fatal shooting at a West Commerce bus stop in late February, and a midday downtown stabbing on April 21 rattled lunchtime crowds. Riders and officials have been voicing growing concern about safety along these high-traffic routes.
Police Canvass Downtown For Clues
SAPD’s Night Criminal Investigations (Night CID) unit is leading the case and detectives are canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage, according to KENS5. Police are asking anyone who saw the attack, or who may have relevant video, to contact investigators or send an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.
