A Sunday ride in East Meadow turned frightening when three male bicyclists reported that a man approached them with a gun near Meadowbrook Parkway and Front Street, leaving them terrified and scrambling to call 911. Police say they later tracked down a suspect and recovered a firearm at the scene. No one was hurt, but the encounter has rattled cyclists and sharpened worries about safety on Long Island streets.
Police identify suspect
According to News 12 New York, officers identified the defendant as 47-year-old Ramzee A. Mayo, described in reports as undomiciled. Police were called to the Meadowbrook Parkway and Front Street area around 4:30 p.m. Sunday after the three bicyclists told officers Mayo displayed a firearm and left them “in fear for their lives.”
Charges and arraignment
Local reporting and police materials indicate Mayo has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon and multiple counts of menacing. LongIsland.com lists the counts as Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd and 4th degrees and three counts of Menacing in the 2nd degree. Investigators also say he had an active Nassau County warrant and was due to be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
Where this fits locally
The confrontation comes just weeks after a deadly shooting at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow that left a teenager dead and renewed countywide concern about gun violence, as reported by NBC New York. Police are treating the cases separately, but residents and local leaders have noted that repeated incidents are steadily ramping up unease about public safety in parks and on neighborhood roads.
Legal process
Mayo is scheduled for arraignment in Nassau County, where he will face the listed charges while prosecutors review evidence and witness statements. Police say the firearm was recovered at the scene and that the investigation remains active. More information is expected as the case moves through the local courts.
