Saturday, May 2 - Morning clouds are hanging over El Paso with the airport sitting at about 52°F, but skies should clear to a mostly sunny afternoon and daytime highs in the upper 60s to low 70s across the lowlands. East winds are already on the breezy side this morning and are expected to pick up later today, with gustier conditions on track by midweek as a stronger west flow builds in.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
East winds this afternoon should run around 8–13 mph, with gusts near 18 mph, especially along the mesa and near the river. You will feel it on outdoor patios and on exposed stretches of roadway. The breeze may be a nuisance, but there are no watches or warnings in effect for El Paso or Hudspeth counties at the time of this update.
Weekend Warm-Up
Temperatures climb Sunday and Monday, with many lowland neighborhoods expected to reach the low 80s on Sunday and then warm further into the mid 80s Monday as winds shift from the southeast to the west. A similar gusty, quick-change pattern showed up in mid April; for background, see our earlier report on that gusty, quick-change pattern in mid-April.
Midweek Gusts And Spotty Showers
The main change arrives Tuesday, when a stronger west-southwest flow brings a slight chance of afternoon showers and isolated thunderstorms, along with much stronger gusts. Forecasts call for west winds around 9–21 mph with gusts potentially into the low to mid 30s, and Tuesday night gusts possibly reaching the mid 30s. Plan for blustery conditions Tuesday afternoon into the evening, especially across higher terrain and exposed stretches of I-10, according to the National Weather Service El Paso.
What To Expect And Tips
Most outdoor plans should be fine this weekend, but it is smart to secure loose patio furniture and be cautious with lightweight structures if you expect gusty winds next week. Recent rain and higher humidity have helped lower fire danger for now, but drying later in the week could bring elevated fire-weather concerns, so avoid outdoor burning when it is windy.
