Elk Grove police are set to unveil a memorial plaque and officially rename their department campus in honor of Officer Ty Lenehan at a ceremony on Wednesday, May 13 at 1:00 p.m. The event will take place at Elk Grove Police Department headquarters on Laguna Palms Way and is open to family, colleagues and members of the public. Lenehan, who died in the line of duty in 2022, will be honored with a permanent plaque and an official campus name.
The department announced the ceremony in a Facebook post on May 4, inviting residents to come to headquarters for the unveiling and remembrance. According to the Elk Grove Police Department, the plaque will honor Officer Ty Lenehan and coincide with the formal renaming of the campus.
City Council Already Authorized Campus Renaming
In September 2022 the City Council voted to waive the usual two-year waiting period and authorize naming the Elk Grove Police Department campus the "Ty Lenehan Public Safety Center." The same action also called for designating a portion of State Route 99 as the "Police Officer Tyler 'Ty' Lenehan Memorial Highway," as laid out in the staff report and resolution from the City of Elk Grove.
How Lenehan Died
Officer Tyler "Ty" Lenehan was struck by a wrong-way driver on Highway 99 and died of his injuries on Jan. 21, 2022, according to a statement from Governor Gavin Newsom. Local coverage at the time reported that the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI and related charges, KCRA reported.
Local Tributes And Legacy
Since Lenehan's death, agencies and advocacy groups have kept his memory visible with a lobby display at the department, memorial patches, and a donated training motorcycle that has been used for ceremonial escorts, according to PORAC. The California Peace Officers' Memorial Foundation also lists Lenehan on its honor roll, reflecting statewide recognition of his service and sacrifice.
