What started as a quiet Friday morning in Edina ended with a father fighting for his life and his son in handcuffs. Prosecutors say 26-year-old Mahamoud Farah of Brooklyn Park shot his father inside an Edina apartment, leaving the man with severe head injuries before taking off toward the suburbs.
The shooting happened inside a residence on the 6300 block of York Avenue South, where officers found the victim with significant head trauma and rushed him to Hennepin Healthcare. Investigators say Farah was later tracked to Brooklyn Park, where a brief pursuit ended with his arrest. He remains in custody.
What Prosecutors Say Happened Inside The Apartment
Farah is charged with second-degree attempted murder and a firearms-possession violation, according to a criminal complaint cited by CBS Minnesota. One of the victim’s other children reportedly called police around 10:40 a.m. to report the shooting, and officers arrived to find the man gravely injured inside the home.
Prosecutors say the case is still very much active, with investigators working to piece together the moments leading up to the gunfire.
Injuries And Eyewitness Accounts
Charging documents obtained by KSTP say witnesses told investigators that Farah and his father had been arguing shortly before the shooting. The complaint alleges that a single bullet struck just below the man’s ear, causing severe trauma to his neck and face.
According to the filing, the shot damaged vertebrae and shattered part of the victim’s jaw, injuries serious enough to keep neighbors and relatives bracing for updates from the hospital.
Store Theft, Matching Ammo And The Arrest
Investigators say the violence may have started with a quick stop at a gun shop. About 30 minutes before the shooting, Frontiersman Sports in St. Louis Park reported the theft of 9mm ammunition, and prosecutors say the brand stolen matched the rounds later found at the York Avenue scene, according to CBS Minnesota.
Police then tracked Farah to a grocery store in Brooklyn Park. After a short pursuit, officers moved in and arrested him. Investigators say they recovered a 9mm handgun, the remaining stolen ammunition and suspected drug residue from his vehicle.
Neighbors On Edge After Second Shooting
The case lands in a city that was already rattled. The incident is Edina’s second shooting in roughly 10 days, following a fatal shooting on April 22, a pattern local readers have been following closely, according to second shooting in roughly 10 days.
The City of Edina noted in a news update that officers believed the suspect and victim knew each other and urged the public to steer clear of the 6300 block of York Avenue South while crime scene investigators processed the area, per the City of Edina.
Charges, Court Date And What Comes Next
Prosecutors have filed attempted second-degree murder and firearms-possession charges against Farah, and KSTP reports his first court appearance was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
The criminal complaint also notes that Farah has prior convictions that bar him from legally possessing firearms or ammunition, forming the backbone of the weapons charge. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office will handle formal charging decisions and bail as investigators continue to dig into what led to the shooting on York Avenue.
