A deadly single-vehicle crash in eastern Escondido yesterday ended with a car in flames and a brush fire racing up a nearby hillside, authorities said. Firefighters moved in quickly, knocking down the blaze before it could spread to nearby homes. The vehicle was destroyed, and officials say what led up to the crash is still under investigation.
Cal Fire crews reported the incident in the 32111 Shirey Road area, where flames from the burning vehicle spread into surrounding vegetation and scorched roughly a 100-by-100-foot patch of brush, according to FOX5 San Diego. Deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff's Office joined Cal Fire personnel at the scene, and officials confirmed to the station that the crash involved only one vehicle and turned fatal. Crews stopped the fire's forward progress and kept nearby structures out of harm's way, authorities told the outlet.
Crews Snuff Out Hot Spots and Shore Up the Perimeter
Engines and brush rigs chased lingering hot spots and built containment lines to box in the burn area. Mutual-aid partners were available as needed while first responders worked the scene and investigators documented the wreckage. No additional structures were reported damaged during the response, officials said.
Small Spring Fires Keep North County on Edge
North County has already seen a run of vegetation fires this spring, including several smaller brush burns along State Route 76 and Interstate 15 that have stretched fire crews across multiple fronts, as reported by 10News. Cal Fire continues to post current burn-status rules and restrictions for San Diego County to limit open burning during dry spells, per Cal Fire. Agencies say jumping on vehicle fires early is key to preventing small sparks from turning into major wildland fires. Residents in brush-adjacent neighborhoods told reporters the crash and hillside fire were a sharp reminder of how quickly a roadside ignition can get out of hand.
Investigators with the San Diego County Sheriff's Office and Cal Fire say the cause of the crash remains under investigation and are asking anyone with information or relevant video to contact their offices. Authorities have not yet released the victim's name and said additional details will be made public as the investigation moves forward.
