An argument at a Sacramento County intersection Wednesday night ended in gunfire, leaving one person shot in the leg and deputies searching for a shooter who had already taken off.
Authorities say the confrontation unfolded at Freedom Park Drive and 34th Street. When deputies arrived, they found three people tied to the dispute. Investigators say one of them opened fire on the other two, then left before law enforcement got there. The injured person was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.
According to CBS Sacramento, deputies determined that a verbal argument had escalated into the shooting. The station reports the suspected shooter was gone by the time deputies arrived, and the two remaining people at the scene were not providing information, according to a statement from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. As of that report, no arrests had been made.
Context: Recent Park Shootings In Sacramento County
This is not the first time recently that Sacramento County law enforcement has had to sort out a chaotic shooting scene in or near a public gathering spot.
Earlier this spring, deputies investigated a separate shooting near Howe Community Park that left four people wounded during an unauthorized gathering, an incident that highlighted how hard it can be to police large, unsanctioned events. The Sacramento Bee reported that deputies heard about two dozen gunshots while dispersing crowds connected to UC Davis Picnic Day activities and that investigators are still pursuing leads.
Officials have said those kinds of fast-moving, crowded outdoor scenes can quickly splinter an investigation when people scatter before officers can identify witnesses or secure clear accounts of what happened.
What Officials Are Asking For
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office website, investigators are asking anyone with information about the Freedom Park Drive shooting to contact detectives. The department lists its non-emergency line as 916-874-5115, and deputies are urging potential witnesses to call or submit tips through official channels so they can follow up.
Detectives have not publicly released any suspect descriptions, and the case remains active. The sheriff’s office and local outlets are expected to share more details as investigators review surveillance footage, collect statements, and work to piece together what led up to the shooting.
