Last night, Johnson County ended in gunfire near Jack Burton Drive and Texas 174 after officers confronted a man wanted on multiple warrants, according to the sheriff’s office. The suspect, identified as Joseph Boy, was shot by law enforcement and taken to a local hospital. Officials did not immediately release his condition and said no officers were injured.
What Officials Say
Deputies had received a BOLO for Boy, and troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety soon spotted his vehicle and tried to pull him over, county officials said. Instead of stopping, he took off, kicking off a pursuit that began around 6 p.m.
Deputies ultimately used a PIT maneuver that caused Boy’s vehicle to crash. During the attempt to arrest him after the wreck, authorities say he produced a firearm and was shot by officers, according to CBS Texas.
Dallas Express reported that the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office will hand the case to the Texas Rangers, describing that as the standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. Officials said they do not plan to release more details while the investigation is still in its early stages.
Investigation And Context
Local scanner traffic indicated deputies had put out the BOLO because Boy was wanted on multiple warrants and had allegedly threatened to engage in a shootout rather than go back into custody. Initial reports said he was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries and that investigators were still processing the scene.
All officers involved in the incident were reported uninjured, according to DFWScanner.
Legal Process
According to the sheriff’s office, the Texas Rangers are set to take over the investigation, which officials described as a routine procedure in Texas when shootings involve sheriff’s personnel. No criminal charges had been announced as of the latest updates, and authorities said they expect to release additional information once the Rangers’ inquiry is underway, according to Dallas Express.
