After months of construction and a lot of waiting around for regulars, Irene’s Finer Diner is quietly humming again in North Center. The neighborhood spot has reopened after a 2024 grease fire, bringing back staples like its much‑loved biscuits and gravy while slipping in new dishes such as shakshuka and restoring a house bread program. For now, the team is easing in with a soft‑open schedule focused on breakfast and lunch.
The diner concept first landed in the same Irving Park address in 2022, according to Eater Chicago. These days, the Irene’s Finer Diner website lists current hours as "Everyday 8 AM - 2 PM" and points folks to its social channels for the latest updates. The reopening marks a homecoming for chef Noah Zamler and his partners, who have been steering the menu since the diner first opened.
Rebuild, Return And A Refreshed Menu
The rebuilt space swung its doors back open earlier this month after the 2024 grease fire kept the diner dark for an extended stretch. The team even briefly closed the dining room last Tuesday to "reset and reassess" before rolling into the current soft relaunch. That reset keeps fan favorites like biscuits and gravy front and center, while adding shakshuka and reviving a bread program built on rye and multigrain sourdough loaves.
There is more in the works outside the main diner, too. The owners have opened a separate bagel shop at 1942 W. Montrose Ave and plan to sell bagels, baked goods and New York‑style pizza at five farmers markets this summer. As reported by Block Club Chicago, co‑owner Noah Zamler said, "it's great to be back in the neighborhood," while co‑owner Cristian Mendoza called the return "really emotional."
What To Know Before You Go
If you are planning a visit, the diner is in soft‑open mode and serving daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., per the restaurant’s website. The owners say they expect to keep tinkering with the menu, so diners should keep an eye on the site and social media for farmers market dates, new items and other updates.
