Greektown woke up to a gut punch: after 20 years in the neighborhood, Meli Café’s longtime location has quietly closed, with only a note on the front door thanking customers for “20 wonderful years.” Regulars who treated the spot as a default brunch destination were met with locked doors and a farewell message, while Meli’s River North and Printers Row locations continue to operate, and the Greektown space now sits empty.
Note On The Door, Brief Goodbye Online
According to FOX 32 Chicago, a printed message taped to the entrance at 301 S. Halsted thanked “our loyal guests, neighbors, friends and community” for two decades of support. The restaurant also posted a short thank-you on Instagram. As the station points out, neither the note nor the social media post offered any explanation for the sudden shutdown.
Other Meli Locations Still Open
Despite the Greektown closure, the rest of the Meli mini-empire is still in business. On Meli's locations page, the Greektown address remains listed alongside the River North and Printers Row outposts, and those other sites are still shown as active. So while Greektown regulars have lost their go-to, Meli’s brand is not disappearing from the city.
Greektown’s Restaurant Shuffle
Meli’s exit lands in a neighborhood that has already seen a slow reshuffling of its dining staples. Longtime institutions have been bowing out as foot traffic and the mix of nearby businesses evolves. When The Parthenon closed in 2016, the owners cited sluggish business and nearby construction as key factors, Eater Chicago reported at the time. That backdrop helps explain why this latest closure is drawing extra attention from locals who have already watched several landmarks fade out.
What Happens To The Space Now
The restaurant has not given a public reason for shutting down the Greektown location, per FOX 32 Chicago, and there is no word yet on whether the space will reopen under new ownership or be re-leased to a different concept. We will update this story if Meli’s ownership or the property representatives share more details.
