What was supposed to be a regular Sunday at Paddock Mall turned tense fast when an argument escalated, and someone pulled out a gun, prompting a temporary shutdown of the Ocala shopping center and a search for three people now labeled as persons of interest.
Ocala police say no one was shot or injured, but they are asking the public for help identifying three individuals they believe were involved. Detectives are still working to sort out exactly what led up to the confrontation and why a firearm was displayed inside the busy mall.
Police say initial call reported a shooting
According to ClickOrlando, officers were dispatched just after 1 p.m. Sunday after a report of a shooting at the mall. When they arrived, they determined that while a gun had been waved during a heated argument, no shots were actually fired.
Police identified three people seen during the incident as persons of interest and are currently working to confirm who they are. ClickOrlando reports that bystander video showed officers on scene as the response unfolded inside the mall.
Mall remained closed while police secured the scene
The Paddock Mall stayed closed for the rest of the business day while officers kept a visible presence on the property, according to a social media update from the Ocala Police Department and reporting by 352Today. The update, posted around 2:47 p.m., noted that the case "remains under investigation" and that no arrests had been made at that time. Police remained on site for security during the closure.
How to report tips
Anyone who recognizes the individuals or has information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Camacho at 352-369-7000. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers of Marion County at 352-368-STOP (352-368-7867), according to ClickOrlando. Crime Stoppers says tipsters whose information leads to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $3,000.
Why this matters locally
Paddock Mall has seen serious trouble before. It was the scene of a fatal December 2023 shooting that drew a massive police response and public calls for help identifying those involved. That recent history means any security scare at the mall now lands with extra weight for law enforcement and local shoppers alike.
