Memorial Drive turned into a sprawling crime scene Monday afternoon, as a heavy law-enforcement response shut down a stretch of the busy riverside road near River Street after reports of gunfire. Officers converged on the Mobil station at the river-facing end of the drive shortly after 1:30 p.m., roping off part of the area with police tape while ambulances and multiple cruisers clogged nearby streets. Witnesses described panicked moments and serious traffic snarls as police moved in to secure the scene.
According to Boston 25 News, video from the scene showed a cluster of police cruisers and ambulances blocking roads and a section of Memorial Drive taped off as investigators worked. The outlet quoted Mobil employee Dennis Rodriguez, who said, “He just started shooting out of nowhere, and he shot a lot.” Boston 25 News reported that it was not immediately clear whether anyone was injured.
Officials say the area is secure
In an update posted by the Cambridge Police Department, officers said there was no ongoing danger to the public but urged residents and drivers to stay away from the area while they continued to work the scene. Police presence stretched across the River Street intersection as officers handled traffic control and coordinated the emergency response.
Witnesses describe rapid gunfire
Boston 25 News also reported that a witness at the Mobil station claimed a rifle-wielding suspect had been shot by police. Investigators from the Massachusetts State Police and the Cambridge Police Department were on scene actively working the incident. Authorities have not released further details on injuries or any potential charges.
Investigation underway; expect delays
The response snarled traffic and affected nearby businesses, as multiple roads were temporarily shut down and significant delays rippled across the river crossings. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are asking drivers to expect residual backups in the area. We will update this post as authorities release more information.
