Reports of gunfire turned a quiet stretch of Southeast Main Street near Southeast 2nd Avenue into an active crime scene Sunday night, with yellow tape sealing off the block and traffic pushed onto nearby streets as police moved in.
Police response at the scene
Officers quickly locked down the intersection, interviewing people in the area while detectives combed the street for evidence. About six police cars clustered near the corner as the investigation unfolded, and a Portland police officer confirmed the incident was being handled as a shooting, according to KOIN.
Where this fits in a larger trend
City data show Portland's Ceasefire initiative has logged a drop in the 12-month rolling average of injury and fatal shooting incidents, down roughly 21% as of April. That decline is detailed in the Portland Ceasefire April 2026 Data Update. At the same time, shootings continue to draw officers citywide this month, with other mid May incidents, including one that left a man seriously hurt in Southwest Portland, reported by KPTV.
Investigators seek more information
Police have not yet released details about any victims, injuries or suspects and did not immediately provide additional information. Detectives remained on the block into the night, continuing interviews and gathering evidence, and said further updates would come once new details are confirmed, according to KOIN.
