A fast-moving fire ripped through a three-story apartment building in the 1200-block of Harding Avenue in Des Plaines on Wednesday, sending at least four people to area hospitals and triggering frantic, split-second escapes. Flames and thick smoke pushed out from the roof as residents scrambled to get out and first responders rushed in. Witnesses reported a loud explosion and people screaming for help before fire crews made it to the scene.
According to ABC7 Chicago, Des Plaines fire officials said four people were transported to hospitals while firefighters battled heavy flames. The blaze was centered in a three-story apartment complex in the 1200-block of Harding Avenue, with flames clearly visible pouring from the roof.
Neighbors staged daring rescues
Neighbors told ABC7 Chicago they heard a loud explosion, then bolted outside to help residents get out. "We were helping a lady get off the building and we saw another gentleman on top of the building, he was badly burned," neighbor Mike Motschman said. One woman reportedly jumped onto a trash can neighbors shoved under her window; ABC7 reported she seemed physically OK but badly shaken.
Why apartment fires escalate fast
Fire experts say modern furnishings and synthetic materials shorten the time between ignition and life-threatening smoke conditions, which means people often have only minutes to escape. As Fire Engineering explains, smoke, not visible flame, is frequently the deadliest threat. Research highlighted by The Pew Charitable Trusts notes that protections such as sprinklers and self-closing doors can help contain smoke, limit its spread, and reduce fatalities.
What officials say and what comes next
As of the latest reporting, officials had not released an official cause of the fire or a full update on victims' conditions. Investigators will work to determine where the blaze started and what triggered it. Residents looking for information have been urged to monitor updates from local authorities as the scene is cleared and the investigation moves forward.
