A suspected after-prom party in Hazel Park exploded into violence earlier today when a dispute turned into gunfire that left a 20-year-old man dead and a 19-year-old woman wounded, according to police. Officers were called around 1:15 a.m. to the area of Powell Avenue near I-75 and arrived to find people scrambling away from the house. Both victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, where the man later died, and the woman was treated for injuries described as non-life-threatening.
According to ClickOnDetroit, the shooting unfolded in the 23000 block of Powell Avenue near Orchard Avenue after multiple 911 calls reported trouble. Investigators told the outlet that gunfire was exchanged both inside and outside the home, and detectives are working to secure search warrants as they dig into what started the chaos.
Scene and victims
WXYZ reports that officers found a 20-year-old Detroit man lying outside the home and a 19-year-old Pontiac woman several houses down the street. Both were transported to hospitals, where the man was later pronounced dead. The station notes that early information points to the gathering being an after-prom party, although police have not released any suspect description or information.
Investigation continues
Police have not named any suspects and say detectives are canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses, video, and other evidence. FOX 2 Detroit reports that arriving officers saw multiple people running from the scene, and investigators are in the process of obtaining search warrants as they piece together how the dispute escalated.
Broader pattern
The Hazel Park shooting is the latest in a run of post-prom and after-prom violence reported in the region this month. An earlier post-prom gathering in Fruitport Township turned into a multi-injury shooting that scattered a large crowd and complicated the police response, according to reporting by Spectrum News.
No arrests have been announced in the Hazel Park case, and police say the investigation remains active. This story will be updated as authorities release additional information.
