Police say a Hialeah man is facing an attempted murder charge after a sudden knife attack left another man clinging to life on Sunday night.

Investigators identified the suspect as 46-year-old Karel Diazgonzalez, who was taken into custody on May 3 at his apartment in the 100 block of West Seventh Street. The victim, who suffered life-threatening injuries, was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center and underwent surgery, authorities said.

According to WSVN, officers arrived around 8:18 p.m. after reports of a stabbing and found the wounded man sitting on the floor while family members tried to stem the bleeding from his head and body. Detectives said they followed a trail of blood from the scene to Diazgonzalez’s residence and saw blood outside and on the apartment door handle. When officers made contact with the suspect, they reported noticing blood on his ear. Based on witness statements, surveillance footage and physical evidence, investigators said they had probable cause to charge him with attempted second-degree murder.

Serious Injuries Treated at Ryder Trauma

The victim was taken to Jackson Memorial’s Ryder Trauma Center, Miami-Dade County’s Level I trauma facility, where surgeons treated his wounds. According to the Ryder Trauma Center’s website, the hospital handles thousands of critical cases each year and keeps specialized surgical teams ready for life-threatening emergencies, which is why severely injured patients are regularly transported there.

Surveillance, Weapon Recovery and Arrest

Investigators told WSVN that surveillance video showed Diazgonzalez speaking with the victim under a tarp, then returning to his apartment before coming back out holding a large kitchen knife. The footage then allegedly shows him running toward the victim as the man tried to escape. Police said they later recovered a knife from underneath a nearby parked vehicle. According to investigators, Diazgonzalez declined to provide a statement after being advised of his rights. He was taken to jail and ordered held for a bond hearing, authorities said.

What the Charge Means

Prosecutors have charged Diazgonzalez with attempted second-degree murder, a count that relies on both Florida’s general attempt statute and the state’s murder law. Under Florida law, "attempt" is defined in Fla. Stat. 777.04, while second-degree murder is outlined in Fla. Stat. 782.04. Together, those provisions shape how attempted murder charges are brought and punished in Florida. The specific penalties will depend on how the case is formally charged, its statutory classification and any potential sentencing enhancements.

Hialeah police are asking anyone with information about the stabbing to contact investigators. This story will be updated as court records or official statements provide more details on the case.
