Newly released video from a late-night disturbance in Jacksonville's Holiday Hill neighborhood shows a man kicking in doors at occupied homes, pointing a handgun at a resident inside a bedroom, then turning the weapon toward arriving deputies just before they open fire. The footage, drawn from home-surveillance cameras and police body-worn cameras, tracks the encounter from front porch to driveway in the minutes before the shooting.
How The Late-Night Call Escalated
Patrol officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office were dispatched around 11:30 p.m. on May 4 to reports of "armed criminal mischief" on the 8200 block of Rigel Road off Century 21 Drive in Holiday Hill, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The agency reports that four officers fired after the man pointed a handgun at them and ignored repeated orders to drop the weapon. He was taken to a hospital and later died, and the State Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent review of the shooting.
What The Video Captures
Surveillance footage released to the public shows the man walking up to a front door, ringing the bell, then driving his foot through the door while holding a handgun, as reported by News4JAX. In another clip, he appears in a hallway, standing over a bedroom doorway with the gun aimed toward someone inside the room.
Additional video appears to show the confrontation with law enforcement outside. In that sequence, the man is seen in a driveway, turning the gun toward officers before they fire and he collapses to the ground, consistent with the account provided by investigators.
Neighbors Describe A Terrifying Night
Residents in the normally quiet block were jolted awake by what some first assumed were fireworks, only to find bullet holes in homes and neighbors being treated in yards, according to News4JAX. One woman told reporters, "I’m still shaking to my core," after learning how close the chaos had come to her front door.
Two of the houses where doors were kicked in had children inside at the time, that same reporting notes, and 911 operators were flooded with calls as the situation played out and officers raced to the scene.
The Man At The Center Of The Case
Local records identify the subject as 33-year-old Brandon Laron Kaphers. His name and case details for the May 4 incident appear on the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office open-data listing for officer-involved shootings. The Sheriff’s Office has said Kaphers was a convicted felon and therefore barred from legally possessing a firearm, according to JSO’s open-data portal.
