Police spent the early hours of Monday combing through a Homewood block after gunfire shattered the quiet and left two women hurt, one by a bullet graze and another with a dislocated knee. The shooting unfolded around 2:15 a.m., after a street fight near the 7000 block of Idlewild Street spiraled into chaos, and multiple parked cars were riddled with bullets.
What police say
According to WTAE, Pittsburgh Public Safety reports that officers were dispatched to the 7000 block of Idlewild Street for two ShotSpotter alerts totaling 25 rounds at about 2:15 a.m. A short distance away, at the intersection of North Lang Avenue and Forrest Way, officers found a woman with a graze wound to her leg. She was taken to a hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
Another woman who was at the scene was treated for a dislocated knee and also transported to a hospital, authorities said. Investigators noted that several parked vehicles were struck by the gunfire as the confrontation spilled across the block.
How the investigation is unfolding
Detectives say they are canvassing the neighborhood and pulling surveillance video from nearby businesses and city cameras in an effort to pinpoint who opened fire. The city’s public safety materials explain that ShotSpotter helps first responders track the precise location of gunfire and move officers and EMS in quickly. For more on how the technology is used and logged, the city’s Public Safety Blotter offers additional background.
Scene near Frankstown Avenue
WTAE reported that the active police presence clustered “right by Lounge 7101” along Frankstown Avenue, where crime scene tape and cruisers remained in place as the morning commute ramped up. Authorities said a fight in the street appears to have broken out just before the shots were fired, and officers are now poring over CCTV footage in hopes of identifying a suspect or person of interest.
Neighborhood pattern
Homewood has seen its share of late-night gunfire, and this latest incident fits a troubling pattern of recurring violence in the neighborhood. In August 2024, a fatal Homewood North shooting similarly drew on ShotSpotter activations and city CCTV footage as detectives worked to piece together what happened.
