Two men were wounded in separate shootings about an hour apart in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, May 9, according to police. Officers first responded to gunfire in the 300 block of 49th Street NE, then to another shooting in the 300 block of Water Street SE. Both victims were conscious when medics arrived and were taken to nearby hospitals. Police said the Metropolitan Police Department is investigating both incidents and, as of Saturday morning, no arrests had been made.
As reported by DC News Now, officers were first called to the 300 block of 49th Street NE, where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was conscious and breathing before being transported to a hospital for treatment. Less than an hour later, officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Water Street SE and located a second man with gunshot injuries, who was also taken to a hospital.
A department spokesperson told the outlet that "both shootings remain under investigation with no indication they are connected." In other words, detectives are treating them as separate cases for now.
How to report tips
The Metropolitan Police Department is asking anyone with information, photos, or video to contact its anonymous tip line at (202) 727-9099 or to text 50411. Tips may be eligible for rewards. The department's page on the text-tip program explains how to send anonymous photos and video and notes that the tip line is monitored 24/7.
Neighborhood context
The shootings come on the heels of other recent violence in Southeast D.C. In April, deadly gunfire on the 3000 block of 30th Street SE left one man dead. Detectives in that case, as in the latest incidents, are urging residents to check their doorbell cameras and phone footage and to share any relevant clips with investigators rather than intervening themselves.
Police have not released the names of the two men injured on May 9, and both investigations remain active. Authorities again asked anyone with information to call the MPD tip line at (202) 727-9099 or text 50411. This story will be updated as additional details become available.
