Only hours after walking out of the Sonoma County jail, a 28-year-old man allegedly went on a violent rampage across several blocks in south Santa Rosa on Wednesday evening, police said. The suspect is accused of threatening and assaulting multiple people and damaging property, a burst of chaos that generated a flurry of 911 calls and drew in bystanders who tried to help. Officers arrested him the following morning, and he has remained in custody as of today.
Police Say Bus Stop Assault Sparked String Of 911 Calls
Santa Rosa police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Liam Isaac Kolling. They said he had been released on pre-trial supervision yesterday before heading south on Mendocino Avenue toward downtown. The first emergency calls came in around 6:18 PM, when witnesses reported that Kolling assaulted a woman at Mendocino and Pacific avenues, pressed a broken glass bottle against her hip, and threatened to kill her at a bus stop near Santa Rosa Junior College. Police said he then chased her onto a Sonoma County Transit bus, where the driver and a witness forced him off, according to KRON4.
Witnesses Step In As Suspect Allegedly Smashes Car
While some bystanders and the bus driver worked to get victims out of harm's way, others called 911, police said. Investigators allege that a short time later, Kolling picked up a large stick and smashed the windshield of a car in the 500 block of Nason Avenue, then threatened the vehicle's owner. From there, police say he returned to Mendocino Avenue, where officers were able to detain him. Authorities said he was booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility, where inmate information is listed on the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office inmate search.
Felony Counts Filed As Detectives Dig In
According to the Santa Rosa Police Department, Kolling now faces multiple felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, making criminal threats to injure or kill, felony vandalism, violating a court order, and committing a new felony while on pre-trial release, as reported by KRON4. Police said the investigation remains active and that no further details have been released.
Detectives are still reviewing surveillance video and witness statements and have not identified a motive for the attacks. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Santa Rosa Police Department.
