A gambling dispute inside a Hyde Park home has ended with a 20-year prison sentence for a Memphis man who admitted to a 2023 shooting that left another man paralyzed from the waist down. Prosecutors say the argument over a bet escalated into gunfire inside the residence.
DA's office announces sentence
The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday that 33-year-old Andre Wilson received a 20-year prison term after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree murder, according to Action News 5. Prosecutors said the sentence resolves the case described in the arrest affidavit.
How prosecutors say the shooting unfolded
Action News 5 reported that Wilson entered his plea last week to attempted first-degree murder. According to the arrest affidavit, prosecutors say Wilson lost a gamble on May 20, 2023, in Memphis' Hyde Park area, became irate, went to his car for a rifle, then shot his opponent three times before taking the victim's phone, money and keys.
The victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Court records show Wilson was booked in November 2023 and has an extensive criminal history with at least 12 open indictments.
Sentence, consequences and next steps
After Wilson entered his guilty plea, a judge imposed the 20-year term that prosecutors say covers both the shooting and the related robbery. Any remaining indictments tied to Wilson will continue through the Shelby County criminal docket and could lead to additional hearings.
