A white Jeep slammed into the front of a Norwood childcare center late Friday morning, forcing an abrupt shutdown and leaving the building with what officials called moderate structural damage. Fire crews helped clear everyone from the site and secure the area while inspectors took a hard look at the hit front wall.
Emergency responders arrived to find the SUV lodged in the front of BrightPath Norwood at 1210 Providence Highway, according to Boston 25 News. The childcare chain lists the Norwood center at 1210 Providence Highway, Suite E on its locations page.
Inspector Orders Temporary Shutdown
After the building took the hit, the town’s inspector did not hesitate. “After assessing the damage, the building inspector elected to shut the building down until further evaluation can be made,” the fire department wrote in a Facebook post, as reported by Boston 25 News. Firefighters said the damage was considered “moderate” and reported that no one was hurt.
Experts Urge Barriers and Site Reviews
Vehicle into building crashes happen often enough that federal security experts have formal guidance on how to blunt the impact, literally. The Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency recommends looking at standoff distances and pedestrian protections at vulnerable entry points and considering passive barriers like crash-rated bollards or sturdy planters where they make sense (CISA). Groups that track storefront crashes say these kinds of incidents are a reminder to review site design and traffic flow around building fronts (Storefront Safety Council).
The cause of the Norwood crash is still under investigation. Families and nearby businesses looking to reach the BrightPath Norwood center can find contact details on the chain’s website: BrightPath Kids.
