A 31-year-old Jacksonville man was arrested Saturday after police say he followed a woman into an elevator at a Southside apartment complex, pulled a knife and tried to force her to remove her clothing. Authorities say the suspect later told investigators he had sexually battered or attempted to sexually batter five other people.
What happened inside the elevator
According to investigators, the woman arrived at Point Meadows Place Apartments by ride share and noticed the man on the sidewalk before she stepped into the building elevator. Once the doors closed, officers say the man pulled a knife and ordered her to undress. The victim hit the elevator emergency call button and screamed, and the suspect bolted when the doors opened on the second floor. News4JAX reported the arrest and scene details.
How common these cases are locally
JSO's own annual report shows the agency's Special Assault Unit handles hundreds of sex‑offense reports each year. The 2023 report logged 603 forcible sex‑offense incidents, underscoring the volume of cases detectives juggle while trying to identify victims and connect patterns. JSO's 2023 annual report also notes that a relatively small share of reported forcible‑sex incidents result in arrests, leaving many investigations open for follow‑up.
Suspect's alleged statements and charges
Officers later detained the suspect on the sidewalk at the apartment property and booked him into the Duval County jail. In an arrest report, detectives say the man admitted he followed the victim and intended to rape her in the elevator. He also told investigators he had sexually battered or attempted to sexually batter five additional victims and said he sometimes used a knife or a taser, according to the report. JSO records indicate the man is facing charges across multiple cases. News4JAX has published the arrest details.
Investigators, hotlines and next steps
Detectives asked that anyone who believes they may have been targeted contact the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Special Assault Unit; local outlets have directed tips to the unit at 904‑630‑2168 in past investigations. The arrested man remains in custody and court records have not yet shown a scheduled hearing. Prosecutors and JSO say the investigation into the other possible incidents is ongoing, and they urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
