A tense Friday night unfolded in Oakland Park when a man armed with a knife barricaded himself inside an apartment building, forcing deputies to evacuate nearby units and partially shut down a busy stretch of West Oakland Park Boulevard.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office said the trouble started just before 6 p.m., when they got a call about a knife-wielding man in the 800 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard. According to CBS Miami, deputies arrived to find the man retreating into an apartment and barricading the door, turning a routine call into a full-blown standoff that stretched into the night.
As the situation escalated, traffic on part of West Oakland Park Boulevard was shut down while deputies and fire-rescue crews locked down the scene. Officials said the incident remained active for hours as they tried to safely resolve the standoff.
Heavy Sheriff’s Office Presence, Neighbors Forced Out
“BSO has evacuated the surrounding apartments as a precaution,” the sheriff’s office told CBS Miami. Residents in adjacent units were moved out while the agency flooded the complex with resources, including K-9 teams, its Violent Crimes Unit and SWAT. Oakland Park Fire Rescue crews also staged nearby to assist.
Authorities said it was not immediately clear if anyone else was inside the barricaded unit with the man. With negotiators and tactical units on scene, officials stressed that the investigation was active and ongoing and declined to release further details.
Recent Strain On Local Law Enforcement
This is not the first time Oakland Park residents have watched a major law enforcement response unfold this year. In March, a deputy-involved shooting in the city drew countywide scrutiny and headlines, according to Local 10. The Broward Sheriff’s Office provides policing for Oakland Park and remains the primary agency handling standoffs, barricades and other high-risk incidents in the area.
