Chicagoans rolled out of bed to a mostly sunny, mild Wednesday on May 27, with morning temperatures in the low 60s and an afternoon high on tap near 73°F. It feels like a pleasant late‑spring day at first, but by later tonight the lakefront turns rough, with conditions along Lake Michigan becoming downright hazardous for swimmers and small boats.
Afternoon Cooling And Rising Winds
Skies stay mostly sunny and temperatures should climb to around 73°F this afternoon, but do not get too attached to that number. A developing lake breeze is expected to shove readings back into the mid 60s by late afternoon, especially right along the shore. Winds will start out from the north to north‑northeast at about 5 to 10 mph, then ramp up to around 10 to 15 mph tonight, with gusts that could hit 30 mph.
A backdoor cold front arriving this evening, roughly between 6 and 9 PM, will tighten the onshore flow and kick up waves and dangerous currents along the shoreline. The National Weather Service has a Beach Hazards Statement in effect from Wednesday evening through late Thursday night, calling for 4 to 7 foot waves and Small Craft Advisories for the nearshore waters, according to NWS Chicago.
Air Quality Alert
On top of the choppy lake, the air is not exactly cooperating either. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has issued an Air Pollution Action Day for the greater Chicago area for Wednesday, May 27. Ozone is expected to be the main troublemaker, with the alert in effect through tonight. Active children, older adults and people with lung disease are advised to limit long stretches of outdoor exertion and consider moving activities indoors, according to the Illinois EPA.
What To Do Today
If your plan was to play in the waves, it is a good day to call an audible. Stay out of the water and off piers, jetties and breakwalls while the waves are building. Boaters should take the Small Craft Advisories seriously and avoid heading too far from shore. Cyclists and walkers along the lakefront can expect gusty winds and a rough, choppy view instead of glassy water.
Anyone with asthma, heart conditions or other respiratory issues should avoid prolonged outdoor exertion during the alert period and check local beach and park advisories before heading out.
Through The Weekend
The cooler onshore pattern sticks around Thursday, with highs only near 61°F and persistent breezy north‑northeast winds. After that, things settle into a more comfortable groove. By Friday, sunshine returns in a bigger way, with highs in the low to mid 70s. The forecast looks mostly dry into early next week, although daily lake breezes will keep neighborhoods right along the shoreline noticeably cooler than inland spots.
