A late-night argument between a young couple at a Humble apartment complex ended in gunfire Thursday, leaving a man in his 20s dead and his 17-year-old girlfriend in custody, according to deputies.
KPRC Click2Houston reports Harris County sheriff’s deputies were called around 9 p.m. to the 14800 block of Woodland Hills Drive near Beltway 8, where they found a man with a gunshot wound at an apartment complex. EMS crews pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to investigators cited by KPRC Click2Houston, witnesses told deputies they heard a man and a woman arguing just before shots rang out. A dark vehicle was seen leaving the area, and the 17-year-old, who had been in a relationship with the victim, later returned to the scene in a dark vehicle while deputies were still there. She told investigators she had been present when the victim was shot and was taken into custody.
FOX 26 Houston reports Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Pinkins said deputies arrived to find a Black male in his 20s unresponsive with a gunshot wound. “They believe the teen was involved in the shooting,” Pinkins told the station.
Investigators Hunt for Motive and Missing Gun
Homicide detectives spent hours Thursday night interviewing witnesses, canvassing the complex for surveillance video and collecting evidence as they tried to reconstruct the sequence of events, according to FOX 26 Houston. Authorities say they have not yet recovered the firearm used in the shooting and have not determined how many rounds were fired.
Teen Girlfriend Detained As Case Builds
The 17-year-old was detained by deputies, but officials have not announced any formal charges, KPRC Click2Houston reports. Investigators told the station it is too early to say whether the shooting might have been an act of self-defense, and the case remains very much active.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information or video connected to the incident to contact investigators as they work to piece together what happened. Officials say more details will be released as the investigation moves forward.
