A late-night crash near the busy intersection of Veterans Parkway and New Salem Highway left a Murfreesboro man dead over the weekend, casting a somber mood over one of the city’s fastest-growing corridors.
Police identified the victim as 44-year-old Joshua Dodson of Eagleville. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities said the driver, a 21-year-old woman, was not injured, and Murfreesboro's Fatal Accident Crash Team, known as FACT, is handling the investigation.
Police release initial details
According to WKRN News 2, the crash happened around 11:12 p.m. Saturday near the intersection. Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services responded and transported Dodson to a hospital, WKRN reported, and police confirmed the driver was not hurt.
Murfreesboro police said FACT investigators were at the scene and continue to piece together what happened. At this stage, that typically means careful measurement work on the roadway, interviews with anyone who was nearby and a hunt for any cameras that might have captured the collision.
How FACT investigators approach cases
The Murfreesboro Police Department's Fatal Accident Crash Team typically reconstructs collisions, reviews surveillance video and interviews witnesses as part of these probes, according to a city news release describing a prior pedestrian fatality.
The release notes that FACT often spends days analyzing physical evidence and reports before releasing final findings, so answers in cases like this rarely arrive overnight. MPD's public information office had not posted a dedicated statement about this particular crash as of Monday evening.
Local context: pedestrian safety in Tennessee
Tennessee has been grappling with persistently high pedestrian deaths, and state safety plans point to road design, speed and lighting as key ingredients in how dangerous a corridor can be for people on foot. The Tennessee Highway Safety Improvement Program lays out statewide priorities for projects aimed at reducing fatal and serious crashes and highlights targeted pedestrian safety initiatives.
Advocates say multi-lane, high-speed routes that cut through fast-growing suburbs can be especially risky after dark, a description that will sound familiar to many who regularly drive the Veterans Parkway and New Salem Highway area.
How the community can help
Investigators have urged anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or who has video from the Veterans Parkway and New Salem Highway area around the time of the collision, to contact the Murfreesboro Police Department, according to WKRN News 2.
Police typically ask witnesses to call the department’s media line or use official reporting channels, per a Murfreesboro Police Department media release. FACT continues to investigate, and officers have said they will share updates when more information is available.
