An early Wednesday crash on Highway 214 near Silver Falls left an 18-year-old Salem driver dead after the Subaru WRX he was in veered off the road, slammed into a tree, rolled down an embankment and burst into flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 24-year-old passenger was airlifted to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Troopers shut down the highway for hours while investigators and emergency crews worked the wreckage in the dark.
State police outline the scene
According to the Oregon State Police, troopers were called out at 1:52 a.m. Wednesday for a single-vehicle crash on Highway 214 near milepost 22. A preliminary investigation found that a Subaru WRX driven by 18-year-old Adrian Ramos Monroy of Salem left the roadway, hit a tree, continued down an embankment, came to rest and then caught fire.
OSP said Ramos Monroy died at the scene. A passenger, 24-year-old Hallyenangel Marie Hance Route of Salem, was flown by Life Flight to an area hospital with serious injuries. Drakes Crossing Fire Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the crash site.
Road closure and local reporting
FOX 12 reported that the highway was affected for about five hours while crews cleared the scene. The station also noted that investigators believe a high rate of speed was a contributing factor in the crash. Officials have not released any additional information about what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
Speed and safety on Oregon roads
State transportation data shows that 47% of crashes involve distraction, impairment or speeding, and the Oregon Department of Transportation reports that many rural collisions happen when a vehicle runs off the road. In those situations, higher speeds can quickly turn mistakes into deadly impacts.
ODOT continues to promote speed management strategies and focused safety projects in partnership with law enforcement, with the goal of cutting down on fatal and serious-injury crashes across the state.
Investigation ongoing
The Oregon State Police said its Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the crash. Troopers have not released further details about any possible mechanical issues or whether charges might be filed.
