Early Thursday morning, a fire tore through a two-story home in Richmond Hill, killing a man and leaving neighbors on Lefferts Boulevard near 95th Avenue badly shaken. Flames ripped through much of the house and drew a heavy emergency response to the residential block.
According to New York Daily News, more than 79 firefighters, EMTs and paramedics responded to the scene, and crews brought the blaze under control in about 30 minutes. The outlet reports that firefighters found a man badly burned at the rear of the home, and he was later pronounced dead.
Where the Fire Hit
Public property records list the home at 94-44 Lefferts Boulevard as a two-family, frame dwelling built in 1920, according to PropertyShark. The Lefferts Boulevard stretch in South Richmond Hill sits a short walk from 95th Avenue and is largely residential.
Investigation Underway
Fire marshals are working to determine what sparked the blaze, and authorities are still trying to identify the victim, according to New York Daily News. Officials had not released the man’s name or additional details as of the initial reports.
Investigators are asking neighbors who saw the fire or have video to share anything that could help the case. Family members or others with information about the resident are urged to contact local authorities.
