Lorain County is saying goodbye to one of its most familiar political hands. Jeff Armbruster, the veteran local official who served as Lorain County administrator, North Ridgeville mayor and an Ohio state senator, died peacefully at home on Friday after a brief battle with brain cancer. He had returned to county government in early 2023 and was once again a regular presence at commission meetings and county projects.
County Commissioner Jeff Riddell said Armbruster was diagnosed with brain cancer about two months ago and had previously beaten cancer twice, calling him “not just an employee but a friend.” Riddell noted that Armbruster had served as county administrator since February 2023, helping to shepherd budgets and county programs, as reported by The Morning Journal.
The Lorain County Republican Party said it was “saddened to learn” of Armbruster’s passing, party chairman Bob Meilander told The Morning Journal. County Commissioner Gregory Fanning also offered condolences to Armbruster’s wife, Lee, and their family, the paper reported.
Decades in Public Service
Official county records list Armbruster as the county administrator, a role that placed him at the center of day-to-day operations in the commissioners’ office, per the Lorain County staff directory. It was the latest chapter in a long public career that included two terms as North Ridgeville mayor and a stint representing the area’s 13th District in the Ohio Senate, according to Wikipedia.
At the Dais and On the Record
Meeting agendas and minutes show Armbruster regularly taking the mic to brief commissioners on county projects, from infrastructure efforts to housing programs. Those public records list him on staff reports and agendas, a paper trail of an administrator who liked to be in the mix rather than behind the curtain. Armbruster is survived by his wife, Lee. Colleagues described him as a steady hand in county government, and tributes continued to arrive as officials and family made arrangements.
