Midday gunfire shattered an otherwise routine Thursday at 23rd and Mifflin streets in South Philadelphia, where two men were wounded in a street shooting that sent neighbors scrambling for cover.
Police say the shots rang out around 1:30 p.m. A 29-year-old man was hit in the wrist and rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition. A second man took a graze wound to the leg and was treated at the scene by medics, avoiding a hospital trip but not the scare.
Police Still Searching For Shooter
As of Thursday afternoon, there were no arrests and no weapons recovered, according to CBS Philadelphia. Officers locked down the intersection as detectives canvassed nearby blocks, knocked on doors, and hunted for surveillance footage that might show who opened fire in the middle of the day.
How To Share Tips With Investigators
The Philadelphia Police Department's Shooting Investigation Group is asking anyone who saw something or has video from the area to come forward. Tipsters can call 215-686-8270 or the confidential tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477). The department also offers an online tip form and additional contact information on its website for people who prefer not to call.
Daytime Jolt In A City Seeing Fewer Killings
Even as detectives work this case, city officials point out that daytime shootings like this are now playing out against a backdrop of declining fatal violence. Analysis from the Pew Charitable Trusts notes that Philadelphia recorded its fewest homicides in decades last year and is on a similar lower trajectory so far in 2026.
Police and community leaders say that kind of progress is fragile. They credit witness tips and surveillance footage with helping them close more shooting cases and argue that cooperation from residents near scenes like 23rd and Mifflin is still one of the most important tools for stopping the next round of gunfire.
