A 52-year-old man was shot and killed inside his West Easton home Saturday morning following a confrontation with two other people who were present, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Troopers responded to the 100 block of Spring Street and found the man dead of gunshot wounds inside the residence where he lived.
Emergency dispatch logs show first responders were called to the scene at approximately 8:51 a.m. on September 12, according to reporting cited by Lehigh Valley Breaking News. Trooper Nathan Branosky said troopers located the deceased man with gunshot wounds inside the home, as reported by Tioga Publishing. State police said the other people who were inside the home at the time were taken in for questioning, and investigators plan to conduct additional interviews as the case continues.
Spring Street Closed as State Police Lead Investigation
Spring Street remains closed between East Street and Ridge Street as investigators process the scene, per the same account. State police said there is no threat to the public. The victim's identity has not been released.
West Easton investigated creating its own municipal police department after 2016, swore in a police chief in November 2019, and did not have a full complement of three part-time officers until mid-2021. The borough itself is tiny — about 0.3 square miles with a population of 1,237 residents as of the 2020 U.S. Census, according to Wikipedia. Pennsylvania State Police Troop M is leading the homicide investigation. Troop M operates out of its Bethlehem Barracks and oversees criminal law enforcement services across 1,300 square miles spanning Bucks, Lehigh, and Northampton counties, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.
Multiple Agencies Assisting the Investigation
The investigation is being led by the Troop M Major Case Team, with support from the Troop M Collision Analysis Reconstruction Specialist Unit and the Troop M Forensic Services Unit. The Easton City Police Department and Wilson Borough Police Department are also assisting. Suburban Ambulance and the West Easton Borough Fire Department are also assisting, along with the Northampton County Coroner's Office and the Northampton County District Attorney's Office.
The Northampton County Coroner's Office responded to the scene and may order an autopsy when necessary to determine the cause and manner of death. Investigators plan to work with both the coroner's office and the district attorney's office as the case moves forward, and they intend to obtain a search warrant as part of the ongoing probe.
Self-Defense Statutes Could Shape Any Charging Decision
Because the shooting happened inside a residence and involved multiple occupants who were brought in for questioning, any charging decision will likely hinge on Pennsylvania's self-defense statutes. Under 18 Pa.C.S. § 505, individuals who use force inside their own home have no legal duty to retreat if they reasonably believe force is necessary to defend against unlawful physical force or serious bodily injury, according to the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The Northampton County District Attorney's Office operates a specialized Violent Crimes Unit tasked with evaluating major incident reports, assessing self-defense claims, and determining whether formal charges are warranted, per the Northampton County District Attorney's Office.
This is not the first fatal residential shooting Troop M has investigated in Northampton County this year. A linked report described an in-home dispute in Allen Township on July 24, with an account available here. Then on August 23, state police and Northampton County authorities responded to another fatal home shooting in Freemansburg Borough that left one woman dead and a man critically injured. The West Easton investigation involves coordination among state police, the county coroner, and prosecutors.
