A man who was shot Monday evening in the Mayfair neighborhood of Northeast Washington, D.C., has died at a hospital, and police are now treating the case as a homicide. Officers were called to the 3700 block of Hayes Street NE, where the killing has intensified long standing concerns about gun violence in the area.
According to WJLA, Metropolitan Police Department officers responded around 6:28 p.m. to reports of gunfire and found a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. D.C. Fire and EMS rushed him to a hospital, where he later died despite life saving efforts. Police say they are looking for a dark blue Audi Q5 with possible Virginia license plates and have not released additional details about the victim or any suspects.

Detectives are urging anyone who saw the shooting or captured it on camera to speak up. Anonymous tips can be called in to (202) 727-9099 or texted to 50411. The Metropolitan Police Department explains how to send photos or video to investigators and notes that some homicide tips may qualify for rewards.
Hayes Street's Troubled History
The 3700 block of Hayes Street has seen repeated violence in recent years, including a Mother’s Day 2023 shooting that killed 10-year-old Arianna Davis, a case that galvanized citywide outrage and renewed calls for action on gun violence. For more on those earlier incidents and the investigative response, see reporting by The Washington Post.
MPD’s Homicide Branch is leading the latest investigation and has not publicly identified any suspects or filed charges, while detectives continue to canvass the neighborhood for witnesses. As WJLA noted, investigators have also asked residents to review and share footage from doorbell or security cameras and to register their systems with CameraConnect DC if they are able.
