Everett police say a masked man armed with a knife held up a convenience store at 82 Main Street on the evening of Tuesday, April 21, then took off on foot. Officers rushed to the scene, and what started as a tense few minutes behind a store counter quickly turned into a multi-day, multiagency hunt that ended with two people in handcuffs in Boston.

According to investigators, Everett detectives worked with outside agencies, secured arrest warrants, and ultimately coordinated the Boston takedown. Police are calling it the product of a sustained, team-based investigation that did not let up until the suspects were tracked across city lines.

How investigators tracked the suspects

Members of Everett's Impact Unit fanned out through the neighborhood, reviewing surveillance cameras and canvassing nearby spots for any clue that might point to the robber, police said. Officers Richard Martignetti and Sean Fitzpatrick pulled hours of footage from MBTA buses and trains, then matched that transit video with street-level images.

That careful video work provided clear images, helped investigators identify two suspects, and gave them the probable cause they needed for arrest warrants, according to the Everett Police Department.

Arrests and charges

Boston police officers later arrested the two people identified by Everett investigators. One suspect, Richard Burns, is formerly of Wakefield, Everett police said. Burns is expected to be charged with robbery while armed and masked, assault to rob (armed), and assault with a dangerous weapon (knife).

A second person, Corey Roy, is expected to face accessory-after-the-fact charges related to an armed, masked robbery. Everett police publicly thanked the Boston Police Department and Transit PD for stepping in to help close the case.

Legal process and next steps

Detectives said they secured the arrest warrants and that the charges will be sent to prosecutors in Boston as the case begins to move through the court system. The investigation is still active, with Everett detectives continuing to review surveillance video and chase down additional leads, according to the Everett Police Department.
